During their home Games, which featured a round-robin format, the United States women's field hockey team got the better of Australia in a penalty shoot-out with a score of 10-5. Both teams finished third, having identical points and goal differences after all the matches ended, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out between the two before the USA emerged victorious.
