After Jordan Chiles was asked to return her bronze medal, USA Gymnastics released a statement regarding the US team's inquiry submission within the 1-minute deadline in the Paris Olympics floor finals. Chiles was upgraded to bronze after a change of score but the initial third-place finisher, Ana Barbosu of Romania, will get back her medal in a reallocation ceremony.
Jordan Chiles competed in her second edition of the Olympics in Paris, winning the team gold and placing fifth in the floor finals. Her score of 13.666 in the latter event was later changed to 13.766, following her team's appeal to score one of her leaps correctly. The new score awarded the bronze to Chiles, ousting Ana Barbosu of Romania.
The Romanian Gymnastics Federation, moved by Barbosu's heartbreaking sight on the stage, reached out to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, claiming that the inquiry of Jordan Chiles was submitted after the 1-minute deadline. CAS, after a 5-hour-long hearing session, confirmed that the Ana Barbosu's position would be reinstated but the return of the medal was unconfirmed.
Since FIG couldn't overturn the decision, the International Olympic Committee ordered Jordan Chiles to return her bronze. The mayhem prompted Chiles to momentarily quit social media for her mental health. Following this, USA Gymnastics contradicted GFG's claims, stating that the inquiry was submitted within the 1-minute deadline but the video was unavailable at that moment.
"The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted. The vekhiluideo footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunal's decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it." (via an X post by a fan)
USA Gymnastics backed Jordan Chiles when she faced backlash from the sporting community
Chiles was in tears after the new scores flashed on the scoreboard. She hugged her coach, Cecile Landi, and her US counterpart, Simone Biles, after winning the first individual Olympic medal of her career.
However, after the Romanian Gymnastics Federation addressed the faults of FIG's decision, seeking justice for Ana Barbosu, fans threw shade at Chiles and asked her to return her medal.
USA Gymnastics stood as a shield and opened up about the treatment Chiles was having to face.
"No athlete should be subject to such treatment," the statement read, in part. "We condemn the attacks and those who engage, support or instigate them. We commend Jordan for conducting herself with integrity both on and off the competition floor, and we continue to stand by and support her," USA Gymnastics released a joint statement with the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee. Ana Barbosu, the current floor bronze medalist, also extended support to the 23-year-old US gymnast after both of them went through the commotion they didn't deserve.
