The comparison between Usain Bolt and the Australian sprinter, Gout Gout, is making waves all over the internet. The latter's stellar performance in the 200m dash at just 16 years old has made the track and field community draw comparisons between him and the track legend, Bolt.
There is no doubt that Bolt was the best of his time, and many of his records are still untouched; however, this Australian 16-year-old has already surpassed every U18 record and is currently on top. Bolt became the record-holder for the fastest time by a 16-year-old when he ran 20.13s in the 200m dash in 2003 at the Pan American Junior Championships.
However, his record has been surpassed by Gout, who recently ran a blistering speed of 20.04s in the 200m at the Australian Schools Championships in Brisbane, making himself faster than 16-year-old Usain Bolt.
Gout has not only surpassed the track legend's 200m time when the latter was 16 but has also surpassed the iconic 56-year-old national record of 20.06s set by Peter Norman in the 1968 Olympics. Along with this, on the same day, he also set another record in the 100m heats, as he ran 10.04s, which was the fourth-fastest time ever run by an Australian under the age of 18.
Gout Gout opened up about the comparisons with Usain Bolt
Gout Gout recently sat down for an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald after becoming a sensation in the track and field world following his staunch performance at the Australian School Championships. Here, he spoke about the comparisons made between him and Usain Bolt and said that he also sees the similarity and mentioned his traits, which he thinks match Bolt's. (as quoted by nine.com.au)
"I just knew he won back in the day, but I didn't know what time or like how he did it, but one of the news articles said I did it. And I was like 'Wow, that's pretty cool'," Gout said.
Talking about the similarity with Usain Bolt, he added:
"I do see it. My stride length is pretty long, my knee height is pretty high and just the amount of tallness I get when I'm running. I'm just me trying to be me. Obviously, I do run like him. I do sometimes look like him, but obviously I'm making a name for myself, and I think I've done that pretty well. I just want to continue doing that and continue to be not only Usain Bolt but continue to be Gout Gout."
The Australian sprinter is currently competing at the All Schools Championships in Brisbane.
