With two days left for the much-awaited Paris Olympics, the American swimmers left their pre-training camp in Croatia to head to the French capital. 48 athletes will represent the American swimming squad at the 2024 Paris Games.
After training at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, North California, the USA swimming team headed to Bazeni Kantrida in Rijeka, Croatia for their pre-Olympic training on July 11, 1014. The swimmers perfected their skills until January 22, 2024, before setting off for Paris.
As they departed for Paris, several athletes, including Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglas, and Anna Peplowski bid their warm farewell to Paris. Douglas posted a few pictures along with her fellow teammates, where they were seen honing their skills. She also shared pictures from their short excursion in Croatia, where she delighted in a cup of chocolate gelato and captioned the pictures,
"Byeee Croatia !! Off to Paris ✈️"
Gretchen Walsh, who is headed to her first Olympics, attended the pre-competition camp in Croatia along with her sister Alex, who secured a silver medal in the 200m medley at the Tokyo Olympics. Gretchen bid farewell to Croatia and warmly welcomed Paris.
"Ciao Rijeka! Ciao Paris," Gretchen wrote.
Josh Matheny, who will be competing in the men's 200m breaststroke wrote,
"Amazing experience in Croatia!! Time to kick it in Paris."
The 2023 World Championship silver medalist Anna Peplowski, who will compete in the 4x200m freestyle relay alongside Alex Shackell, Erin Gemmell, Katie Ledecky, and Paige Madden conveyed her excitement for the Paris Olympics while saying goodbye to Croatia.
"Bye bye Croatia," she wrote. "Excited for what is to come🥖"
Shackell also shared a few pictures from the camp, including training and signing autographs for fans, and added a heartwarming caption.
"Core memories made in Croatia 🇭🇷… to more in Paris," Shackell wrote.
3 USA swimmers with world record to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics
Katie Ledecky will compete in the women's 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events. The American swimmer set the world records in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events by clocking 8:04.79 and 15:20.48 at the 2016 Rio Games and 2018 TYR Pro Swim, respectively.
Caeleb Dressel, who holds the 100m butterfly world record, posted during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with 49.45 seconds, will compete in the event to defend his title in Paris.
Gretchen Walsh, who will compete in four events in Paris, 100m butterfly being one of them, set the world record in the event in the semifinal round of the 2024 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials by clocking an impressive time of 55.18 seconds. The swimming events at the Paris Olympics will kick off on July 27, 2024.
