A video of Mondo Duplantis clearing an impressive height in pole vault at a very young age has resurfaced following his record-breaking performances at the Paris Olympics and Diamond League meetings. Since taking up the sport at just 4 years old, Duplantis has been breaking world records across age groups and at elite international competitions.
He established his first age-group world record in the pole vault at the age of seven. At the age of 10, he went on to break the age-group world records for 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds.
Following his exploits at the Olympics and the Silesia Diamond League where he broke the world record with 6.25 and 6.26 marks respectively, and a thrilling 100m showdown against Karsten Warholm which he won in a 10.37s, a video from his pre-teen years has resurfaced. In the video, young Duplantis is clearing a height of 3.86 meters (12 feet 8 inches) at just 10 years old, shared by Jumpers World on their X account. One can watch it here.
The video is from the year 2010 from a track and field event that took place in Clovis, California, and was uploaded on the YouTube channel, Bob Duplantis. Mondo's father, Greg Duplantis, has been documenting these videos since he participated in junior, youth, and age-group competitions.
Following breaking the U20 (junior) world record with a clearance of 5.90m at the 2017 Texas Relays, he became the junior world champion with his gold-medal triumph with a best effort of 5.82m at the stage of the 2018 World U20 Championships.
Mondo Duplantis broke the senior world record for the first time at the World Athletics Indoor Tour in Torun, Poland, in February 2020 by clearing 6.17 m and surpassing the previous record of 6.16 m held by France’s Renaud Lavillenie, which had stood for nearly six years. He again shattered the world record, a week later, with a 6.18m clearance.
So far, Mondo Duplantis has broken the world record on 10 occasions, with his latest feat accomplished at the Silesia Diamond League where he cleared the 6.26m.
Mondo Duplantis’ older brother, Andreas Duplantis, was his greatest inspiration for pursuing pole vault
Mondo Duplantis once opened up in an interview with World Athletics, the global governing body, on how his eldest brother Andreas Duplantis was his greatest inspiration in choosing pole vault as a sport, he stated:
“He [Andreas Duplantis] was my idol and just watching him grow up and be so much better than me - I just wanted to be like him and follow in my brother’s footsteps.”
Duplantis added how awe-struck he was as a child when he saw his brother pole vault:
“When he was jumping four metres at a time that I was jumping two metres, I just thought that was the most crazy thing and I couldn’t understand how it was possible. It was super inspirational and I wanted to keep trying to see what I could do in the sport.
Notably, Andreas is a former athlete who represented Sweden at the 2012 World Junior Championships and 2009 World Youth Championships where he achieved best marks of 5.20 and 4.70.
