Caeleb Dressel shared an emotional moment with his family after qualifying for his third consecutive Summer Games. Dressel participated in the 100m freestyle at they U.S. Olympic Trials and finished in third position, which didn't qualify him for the individual event but earned him a position in the 4x100m relay team.
Caeleb Dressel holds world records in the 50m freestyle (short course), 100m individual medley (short course) and 100m freestyle (short course and long course). The Olympian won five golds at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first swimmer since 1896 to win the 100m and 50m freestyle and the 100m butterfly in the same Olympiad.
However, his Paris Olympics run for the 100m freestyle individual event ended after he finished with bronze at the 2024 US Olympic Swim Trials, swimming in a time of 47.53s. But his podium finish earned him a spot on the 4x100m relay roster.
After qualifying, Caeleb Dressel ran to celebrate with his wife and newborn son, who were present to cheer him from the sidelines.
In a video shared on X, the Olympian is seen hugging his wife Meghan Dressel, while she holds their son August Wilder Dressel in her arms. The long hug ends with the couple wiping away tears.
The three-time Olympian then took his son in his arms and kissed his forehead affectionately. The moment seems to capture the hearts of the people standing behind them as well in the clip:
Caeleb Dressel and his wife met in high school when both were already competitive swimmers. They got engaged in 2019 and tied the knot in 2021. They welcomed their first child in February this year.
The seven-time Olympic gold medalist now has a chance for individual qualification in the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle as the Paris 2024 Trials progress.
Caeleb Dressel revealed how his wife supported him when he struggled with mental health
Caeleb Dressel felt the pressure building when he was expected to make up for the absence of his former teammate Michael Phelps at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Having won five golds, he decided to keep off the water and prioritize his mental health. During that time, his wife Meghan Dressel helped him develop an interest in the classic TV show Gilmore Girls, which was a good distraction for the Olympian. He revealed (via People):
"Meghan started watching Gilmore Girls, and it's so good. So I've been tearing up some Gilmore Girls."
He also shared that his wife calmed him down at times in the same way she had done in their high school days. Dressel withdrew from the 2022 World Championships midway, citing medical issues, and made his return in May 2023 after nine months.
