America's sprinting icon Gabby Thomas reigned supreme at the 2024 London Diamond League to win the women's 200m event, clocking a new meet record at Stratford's London Stadium.
Running in Lane 6, Thomas fell behind the pack in the initial meters, and it seemed like the race was going in British sensation Dina Asher-Smith's favor, who neared the finish line with blistering speed. However, in a thrilling finish, Gabby Thomas surged ahead towards the end and claimed victory in a meet record-setting 19.82 seconds, the second fastest time of the ongoing season.
Julien Alfred of St. Lucia finished second with 21.86 seconds, setting a new national record, while Dina-Asher Smith took the third spot on the podium, clocking a time of 22.07 seconds. Daryll Neita, a British prodigy, and Rhasidat Adeleke, an Irish athlete, also set season best times of 22.20 and 22.35 seconds, respectively, to finish fourth and fifth.
The video from the competition that captured Gabby Thomas' victory was shared by NBC Olympics and Paralympics. They wrote:
"GABBY THOMAS AT THE LINE! The American gets the victory and the meeting record in the women's 200m. #LondonDL"
Gabby Thomas' victory comes just after winning the US Olympic Trials
Gabby Thomas defeated her compatriot Sha'Carri Richardson in one of the most anticipated track-running faceoffs of the season. Thomas secured her ticket to the upcoming Paris Olympics by winning the 200m finals in 21.81 seconds at the Hayward Field Stadium. Richardson, on the other hand, could not qualify for the French event following a fourth-place finish at the trials.
Speaking about her victory and second Olympic ticket, the 27-year-old stated (via NBC News):
"I was really happy with that. That felt like a really smooth and easy run for me. I didn't really know what to expect. So to see that kind of time for something that felt so nice and controlled was a good feeling."
Elated with her victory at the US Olympics Trials in Eugene, the runner shared pictures from the trials on Instagram along with the following caption:
"I’M GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!!! Feeling a lot of emotions. I know a lot of people expected this for me, but this time feels different."
With two consecutive victories under her belt, Thomas is going to be one of the runners to watch out for at the French event, particularly in the 200m event.
