Gabby Thomas has stamped her authority in the women’s 200m final at the US Olympic trials, winning in style as she clocked 21.81 seconds to cross the finish line. Brittany Brown finished second with a personal best time of 21.90 as Mckenzie Long sealed the podium at 21.91.
However, reigning world 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson fizzled out to finish fourth and miss out on the women’s 200m Olympic team.
Gabby Thomas has been in the form of her life this season, and her win at the Olympic trials confirms her dominance over the distance. She won the preliminaries in 22.11 before claiming top honors in the semifinal, clocking a world-leading time of 21.78 to cross the finish line.
In a video posted by NBC Sport, the world 200m silver medallist, competing in lane eight, has a steady rise from the blocks and she maintains the focus approaching the home straight. The American sprint queen took the lead with about 50m to go and never looked back as she sprinted to the finish line.
The video caption read:
"Gabby Thomas puts on a clinic in her signature event! Wins the #TrackFieldTrials24 200m final in 21.81."
In the women’s 200m, the Olympic Games 200m bronze medallist has enjoyed quite a smooth season, losing only one race, at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix where she finished a disappointing fifth. She started her 200m season with a win at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Truist before her fifth-place finish in Los Angeles.
The 27-year-old then dominated at the USATF New York City Grand Prix, striking with a win before the US Olympic trials where she enjoyed a great run. Gabby Thomas will enjoy the company of Brown and Long on the global stage.
Sha’Carri Richardson will only compete in the 100m as her individual event and double it with the 4x100m relay.
Gabby Thomas sends stark warning to rivals after 200m world lead at US Olympic trials
Gabby Thomas cemented her place as one of the most formidable 200m female runners with her world-leading time at the US Olympic trials.
Thomas clocked a striking 21.78 to claim the top prize in the women’s 200m semifinal, firing warning shots at her opponents including two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson.
The race saw Abby Steiner and Tamara Clark finish second and third, clocking respective times of 22.03 and 22.12 to cross the finish line.
She has since qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the half-lap event. At the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Thomas finished third in the women’s 200m final and she will be out to shed that tag once she steps foot on the purple track.
She was also part of the team that won a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay team and the team has fingers crossed to dethrone Jamaica from the coveted high table.
