Gabby Thomas shared a hilarious moment with coach Tonja Buford-Bailey as she tried to convince her to reduce training on New Year. The American sprinter won the women's 200m title in 2024 and is looking to defend it at the Tokyo World Championships.
Thomas shared a fun-spirited video on Instagram on Wednesday where she was seen sharing a long laughter with coach Buford-Bailey at the start of it before putting on a serious face. Thomas titled the video, "When the joke isn't that funny but you don't feel like running the last set of 200s today", seemingly trying to hilariously delay the training with her long laughter.
Funnily enough, the tactic didn't work as evidenced by her sad face at the end of the video and further confirmed by her caption, which read:
"if only it were this easy smh."
Thomas has been training with Buford-Bailey since the start of her professional career in 2018 when she chose to forego her one year of eligibility at Harvard and signed with New Balance. She moved to Austin, Texas in October 2018 to train at the Buford-Bailey Track Club. Having won five Olympic medals since, the pair continue to maintain a healthy relationship with sights set on the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
The 28-year-old is yet to win a 200m world title, and after winning her first major gold medal in the event at the Paris Olympics, she will be eager to upgrade her silver from the 2023 World Championships into a gold at the Tokyo World Championships in September.
"Really difficult" - Gabby Thomas describes her first day of training for the 2025 World Championships
Gabby Thomas concluded her 2024 season with a second-place finish in the 200m at the Athlos NYC in September and after enjoying a well-deserved off-season, she kicked off preparations for the 2025 track and field season in mid-November.
However, the five-time Olympic medalist confessed to struggling on the first day.
"I just finished Day one of training for the next season. I have World Championships in September of 2025, so we started training today. So many months out, and I am not in the same fitness that I was for the Olympics; I'm not in that shape. Today was hard. I did one time trial, and I did 20 100-meter runs, and it was really difficult," Gabby Thomas said
Apart from aiming for the 200m crown at the World Championships, the 28-year-old will also be eyeing the $400k prize money in the inaugural Grand Slam Track, where she is expected to compete in the short sprints category of 100m-200m.
