Gretchen Walsh and her sister celebrate after the former makes the U.S Olympic Team

After setting a new world record in the 100m butterfly on the opening night of the U.S Olympic Swimming Trials, Gretchen Walsh followed it up with a spectacular performance on Day 2. Competing in the event's finals, the 21-year-old was the first to touch the wall, earning a ticket to her debut Olympic Games.

After her race, the swimmer was quick to celebrate with her big sister Alex Walsh, in a heartwarming display that showed the bond between the two. The elder Walsh, a swimmer and Olympian herself, is competing in three events at the Trials.

In a video shared by USA Swimming on their Instagram account, the two siblings can be seen running and jumping towards each other in excitement, before breaking into a laugh and hugging each other.

Watch the sisters’ heartfelt celebration below:

Going into the women's 100m butterfly finals, Gretchen Walsh was a renewed favorite for the win after she set a world record of 55.18 in her semifinals. Expectations for the Virginia youngster were high, and she delivered with grace. Competing in a packed line-up that featured Tokyo medalists Torri Huske and Regan Smith, Walsh was phenomenal once again.

In a race that saw three of history’s five fastest times, Walsh came within striking distance of her world record with a 55.31. With this, the 21-year-old has now claimed the two fastest times in the event’s history.

Behind her, Huske made the Paris Olympics team with a 55.52, the fourth-fastest swim ever. Lastly, Smith was third with a 55.62, good enough to tie her for fifth on the all-time list with Zhang Yufei, but not enough to get her into the American team.

On the other hand, Gretchen Walsh’s sister, Alex, opened her campaign in Indianapolis by making it to the semifinals of the 100m breaststroke, after clocking a 1:07.82 in the heats. The 22-year-old was a silver medalist at the Tokyo Games and will be hoping to punch a ticket to her second consecutive Olympics at the Trials.

Gretchen Walsh on making it to the Paris Olympics and breaking the world record

After her record-breaking performance at the 2024 NCAA Championships earlier this year,

Gretchen Walsh was certainly a favorite to make it to the U.S Olympic team. However, no one, not even the swimmer herself, expected the amount of domination she would achieve at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Speaking to NBC Sports after winning the 100m butterfly finals, Walsh expressed her shock over her swim, saying,

“I’m still in shock, I don’t even know what to say. Making the team was the biggest goal, but getting the world record was absolute insanity, so I couldn’t ask for a better first event of the meet.”

Up next, Gretchen Walsh is scheduled to compete in 100m and 50m freestyle events at the U.S Olympic Trials. After her stunning performance in the 100m fly, fans will be curious to see what else the NCAA Champion has up her sleeve in the upcoming days.
