The 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, produced a superb performance at the Bislett Stadium on Thursday to clinch the men's 1500-m title in the Diamond League meet in Oslo. This comes just a week after he lost to Josh Kerr, his arch-rival, at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic.

Thus, entering the Oslo Diamond League, Ingebrigtsen was fully motivated to send a statement to the world, and he didn't disappoint. The Norwegian sprinter registered a run time of 3:29.74 as he clinched his first Diamond League win of the season.

Owing to this performance, Ingebrigtsen also registered a new world lead, overtaking Raynold Cheruiyot's 3:31.96, which he set in Nairobi last month. However, the Rogaland native was not the only one to cross this mark on Thursday, as eight other participants also breached this mark.

During the race, the 23-year-old Ingebrigtsen was involved in a close contest with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, Timothy Cheruiyot. But Ingebrigtsen's dive at the finish line proved to be the difference between victory and defeat for the latter, as the Norwegian won the race by a mere 0.03 seconds.

Cheruiyot registered a run time of 3:29.77 and had to contend with the silver medal, while the 2023 European Indoor Championships bronze medalist, Azeddine Habz, clinched the bronze medal thanks to a run time of 3:30.80.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen faced a crushing defeat in the Bowerman Mile of the 2024 edition of the Prefontaine Classic. The Norwegian entered the tournament as the defending champion but couldn't produce the same kind of performance that he delivered last year.

The 23-year-old clinched the silver medal behind his arch-rival, Josh Kerr who clinched the gold medal with a run time of 3:45.34. The Norwegian clocked a run time of 3:45.60. This was the first race between the two juggernauts of the men's 1500-m event after their heated exchanges in the media since the 2023 World Championships.

However, Ingebrigtsen seemed quite content with his silver medal, considering that he was returning from an Achilles injury. During the post-match interview, he stated: (According to olympics.com)

“Even though I have been injured, I still think this is an improvement from last year. Today was more of a time trial for me.”

The Norwegian said in the interview that he felt much better during the race than he had anticipated and that his fitness had significantly improved.
