Jamaica's 22-year-old sprinting sensation, Kishane Thompson, clocked yet another sub-10 finish of his career in the Olympic year to win the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Hungary on Tuesday (July 9).
Kishane Thompson made headlines on Friday (June 28), after he became the joint ninth-fastest 100m runner in history for his world-leading finish at the 2024 Jamaican Olympics Trials at the National Stadium in Kingston. Thompson stormed to a 9.77-second victory that made him the fourth fastest 100m Jamaican of all time behind legends Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Asafa Powell and ensured his maiden Olympic qualification as well.
In his recent event, the runner stood atop the podium of the Gyulai Istvan Memorial, which is a World Athletics Continental Tour-Gold event, with a time of 9.91 seconds. Running in lane four, Thompson had a strong start to the race and was so dominant throughout the sprint that he glanced around in the middle of the race to check whether anyone was close to him.
Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who is the reigning 100m world championship silver medalist, took the second spot with his season best of 9.99 seconds. South Africa's Akani Simbine finished third with a time of 10.01 seconds.
Citius Mag founder Chris Chavez posted the video of the race on his X handle, writing:
"Goodness…Kishane Thompson is looking like he could be the man to beat in Paris. 9.91 while looking around midway through the race. Made it look easy. Beats World Championship silver medalist Letsile Tebogo!"
Kishane Thompson received applause from Noah Lyles for his impressive performance at the Olympic Trials
Kishane Thompson caught the attention of track and field fans and enthusiasts as he carved his name in the history books. Not only did he qualify for the Paris Olympics, but the Jamaican sprinter also surpassed Noah Lyles' season best of 9.83s, positioning himself as a strong medal contender at the French event.
Following the Jamaican Olympic trials, Noah Lyles took to his X account and praised both Thompson and Oblique Seville, who finished second with 9.82s. He wrote:
"Shout out to them boys running out there in Jamaica! y’all are really helping to make this a great Olympic championship."
With the Olympics set to begin on July 26, Kishane Thompson has emerged as a standout athlete to watch with his blazingly quick sub-10 finishes in the 2024 season.
