Mikaela Shiffrin dedicated 'The Devil's Tears' by Angus & Julius Stone to her fiance Aleksander Kilde, singing and playing the semi-acoustic guitar alongside. Shiffrin started her 2024/25 Alpine Skiing World Cup season on October 26, 2024, months after getting engaged with Norwegian skier, Aleksander Kilde.
Shiffrin participated in the 2023/24 Alpine Skiing World Cup, extending her Slalom wins to 60 and overall wins to 97. However, an injury setback shifted her to third in the overall standings behind Lara Gut-Behrami. Following the season, the 28-year-old helped her then-boyfriend Aleksander Kilde out of his shoulder and calf injury, which he sustained in one of his Downhill races.
In April 2024, Shiffrin and Kilde got engaged after two years of dating. They have also vacationed in Mexico and attended one of Taylor Swift's Eras tour shows, among other appearances.
On November 8, 2024, Shiffrin posted an Instagram video of her singing 'The Devil's Tears' by Angus & Julie Stone for Kilde. She also strummed the guitar to go along with the melody.
"I'll taste the devil's tears. Drink from his soul, but I'll never give up you. I'll taste the devil's tears. Drink from his soul, but I'll never give up you," she serenaded and dedicated to Kilde.
Mikaela Shiffrin's post caption read:
"Earlier this week…a lil tune for @akilde. One of the first songs I was ever taught (and my favorite to play)."
The double Olympic gold medalist missed the Giant Slalom podium, the first race in the 2024/25 Alpine Skiing World Cup women's schedule. Despite leading after the first round, she earned fifth place, giving away the win to Italian skier, Federica Brignone.
Mikaela Shiffrin will skip downhill events in the 2024/25 Alpine Skiing season
In the first downhill race of the previous season, Mikaela Shiffrin trounced Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone to take the win. However, in the next downhill race in Cortina d’Ampezzo, she faced an uncharacteristic fall, resulting in a sprain in her left leg's ligament. She missed out on the next 11 races to undergo treatment, prompting her to mindfully skip downhill in the 2024/25 World Cup edition.
"Obviously, I had that crash, and that spurred us to just kind of consider what’s the most effective way for me to train and prepare for these races? Ideally, I want to be racing more speed,” she said. (via Ski Racing, October 14, 2024)
She added:
"I don’t want to believe it (last January) would be my last downhill race, because I love it so much, but it’s not my priority.”
The alpine skier will next grace this season's first slalom race in Levi, Finland on November 16, 2024.
