The most decorated skier of all time, Mikaela Shiffrin is preparing for her 15th World Cup season as she targets her sixth overall title. Recently, the American gave fans an honest inside look at what the less glamorous aspect of her life looks like while competing, leaving her followers amused.
Shiffrin has been competing on the World Cup circuit for 14 years now, having made her debut in 2011 as a 15-year-old. In these years, the Colorado native has claimed 97 wins, making her the winningest skier of all time ahead of the legendary Ingemar Stenmark.
Now, as Mikaela Shiffrin looks to begin what will no doubt be another record-breaking season, she recently gave fans a glimpse of what her life away from the slopes looks like while she's competing.
In a video shared on her Instagram, the 29-year-old can be seen washing her apparel in a bathroom sink. Shiffrin called it her version of washing dishes and went on to explain that wet wool always reminds her of champagne.
“How silly is this, wet wool always reminds me of champagne now, because you get sprayed with champagne on the podium and it gets on your clothes, sometimes the hats and whatnot. And when you get champagne in anything, it smells so bad and now people are like ‘oh you must live champagne’. No, it's the grossest thing ever. People think I have many, many hats and things just floating around, but sometimes you only get one. Sometimes I just have to try to not get champagne spray on things.”
She went on to explain that podium finishers at each race always discuss whether they'll be spraying champagne beforehand, saying,
“That's a discussion we always have on the podium. Like if we should spray and you would think that everyone's just really excited to spray champagne but most of the times we talk to each other and we're like ‘do you want to spray today' and ‘no, let's save it for the team later’. It's such a misconception that it's like the most fun part of what we do.”
Mikaela Shiffrin captioned the video,
“Let's normalize sink laundry!!! Welcome to the next seven months of my life! Can't wait for my hands to constantly smell like "spring linen. PS. No, this is not a detergent or champagne ad...maybe I should get something going there though.”
