Mondo Duplantis claimed his third European pole vault title at the 2024 European Athletics Championships. Despite not setting a new world record, the American-born Swede jumped 6.10m over the bar to edge out his rivals.
Mondo Duplantis, 24, hit the double figures of gold medals he earned at the Olympics, World and European Championships, and Diamond League. He is the current indoor (6.22m) and outdoor (6.24m) world record holder in pole vault. He is also the reigning Olympic champion, having earned the pole vault title in 2020 Tokyo.
In 2023, Duplantis broke his world record for the sixth and seventh time. He first bettered his mark at the All-Star Perche indoor meeting by touching 6.22m. Soon after, he swept the Prefontaine Classic title and broke the record with 6.23m.
The first 2024 Wanda Diamond League stop in Xiamen witnessed the two-time World champion go 6.24m to break his record for the eighth time. At the 2024 European Championships, he aimed to outdo his previous world record-breaking performance but couldn't.
However, he secured a comfortable victory, touching 6.10m. Taking to his Instagram handle, the three-time Diamond League Champion celebrated his third European title with a video montage, compiling clips of some heartwarming moments in Roma 2024.
"European Champ X3!!! 6.10m"
The win at the European Championships was also an extension of his Championship record. In a post-race interview, the 24-year-old unveiled his competitive mindset and how he only wished to have fun at the event, not aiming for the world record.
"I did not really think I was attempting the world record today. It was not part of the plan. After the 6.10 meters, there was just too much energy there. I looked at my parents and we both had the same idea, we were like, ‘It is just fun, so why not?’ I cannot complain," Duplantis said. (via The Associated Press)
