The Mondo Duplantis vs Karsten Warholm saga has come to an end, with the Swede sprinting ahead to victory in the 100m exhibition race that took place at the Zurich Diamond League. Duplantis clocked a personal best of 10.37s, while his Norwegian counterpart took 10.47 seconds to cross the finish line.
This Duplantis vs Warholm rivalry began over a year ago, when the two athletes practiced together ahead of the Monaco Diamond League. The 23-year-old pole vaulter challenged the 400m hurdler to a race, intriguing fans with the possibility of a head-to-head showdown between the two Olympic champions.
Since then, the track world has been divided on which athlete would be better at the short sprint, and on Wednesday, September 4, the 54% of people who guessed it would be Mondo Duplantis in a Citius Magazine poll were proven right.
Duplantis and Warholm arrived at the tracks of the Letzigrund Stadium dressed in boxing gowns, the former in sporting blue while the latter showed up in red. The two lined up on the blocks, and it was the Swede who was the superior sprinter throughout, leading from gun to tape, finishing with a time of 10.37s. After the race, Mondo Duplantis revealed that beating Warholm had been his sole focus since getting back from the Paris Olympics, telling the media:
“I’m pretty fired up. Since the Olympics, I haven’t touched a pole in training, only blocks”
As a result of the reigning Olympic champion winning the race, Warholm will now have to compete while wearing a Swedish kit for his 400m hurdles race at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, September 5.
