Noah Lyles is practicing hard ahead of his 100m and 200m races at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials 2024. The Olympic medalist is the defending champion over the half-lap event, and over the 100m, he had finished third in the 2021 Olympic Trials.
Lyles took the world by storm after winning three titles at the 2023 World Championships. Continuing his hot form, the six-time world champion started off the Olympic year with blistering runs in the 60m indoor competitions at the USATF Indoor Championships, beating world record holder Christian Coleman in the process.
The 26-year-old has run 10.85s over the 100m this season, just 0.2s shy of his personal best. Over the 200m, Lyles is the fastest American of all time and opened his season with a dominant victory in 19.77s against the headwind. He is a favorite for both the titles at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials, and was recently captured working on his start on the Eugene tracks.
Team USA shared a video of Noah Lyles on their Instagram page where the world champion could be seen working on his start. With a near-perfect start, Lyles was running at full throttle on the Hayward Field tracks.
Noah Lyles will be first seen in action on June 22nd in the men's 100m heats. The world champion is slated in Heat 1 of the competition where he will face Kenny Bednarek, Kyree King, Marcellus Moore, Trayvon White-Austin, Sam Blaskowski, and Cravon Gillespie. The men's 100m heats will start at 06:22 pm on Saturday.
Can Noah Lyles win both the 100m and 200m titles?
Noah Lyles finished fourth at the 2016 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials, making it to the alternate for the Rio Olympics. He didn't get a chance to compete in Rio and later went on to win the bronze medal in the 200m at the Tokyo Olympics. Lyles has now set his eyes on four gold medals at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Heading into the 200m event, it will be a surprise if Lyles finishes lower than first place. He is the 2nd fastest over the distance and the fastest American. He opened his season with a blistering 19.77s into the headwind at the USATF NYC Grand Prix. His only close competition will be Kenny Bednarek, but Lyles nonetheless remains a hot favorite to defend his title.
Noah Lyles' premier event is the 200m, but over the 100m, he is a bit weaker, majorly because of his relatively slow start. However, the world champion has shown decent improvement off the blocks and looks set to win both titles. He is the fastest in terms of personal best in the 100m at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials 2024, and could emerge faster than his PB of 9.83s.
