Regan Smith broke her own American record in the women's 100m backstroke event on Day 3 of the 2024 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials. The competition, hosted by Indiana, is a nine-day event that kicked off on June 15 and will conclude on June 23.

Smith is a three-time Olympic medalist and has also clinched five gold medals at the World Championship. Along with this, she set a world record of 2:03:35 in the 200m backstroke event at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, when she was just 17 years old.

On Day 2 of the swimming trials, Smith couldn't qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024 in the women's 100m butterfly. However, the 22-year-old made a strong comeback on Day 3 by breaking her own American record, which was created less than a month ago at the Speedo Grand Challenge in the semifinals of the 100m backstroke event.

On Monday, she surpassed her own record of 57.51s by clocking a time of 57.47s and besting Katharine Berkoff, who clocked a time of 57.83s. Josephine Fuller and Kennedy Noble claimed the third position, as both clocked 58.79s.

NBC Sports shared the 100m backstroke race's clip on X, as Smith left everyone behind and nabbed the win for herself. The caption read:

"WOW. Regan Smith broke her OWN AMERICAN RECORD in the women's 100m backstroke."

The Bob Bowman trainee said she was "proud" of her performance in the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke event at the Olympic Trials. She also spoke about setting an American record twice in one month in the post-swim interview.

"I'm really proud of it," Regan Smith said (via Swimming World). "I think I executed really well, and it's fun to just chip away at my best time. And to do a best time twice in one season, it's awesome."

Smith also lauded Katherine Berkoff's swim and spoke about focusing on the world record by working on her execution like Kaylee McKeown.

"I think Katharine's going to help push me a lot. I was so fricking proud of her 57 tonight, so I think we're going to have a great race. I'm 0.14 away from it, so it's all about details, and Kaylee is wonderful about executing everything perfectly, and I think that's where she gets those hundredths. I'd like to work on doing the same," she added.
