Sha'Carri Richardson has always been one of track and field's boldest personalities when it comes to fashion. Most recently, the American wowed fans when she showed up at the Prefontaine Classic with a bold new set of nails.
For Richardson, this outing at the Pre marked her first 100m race of the Olympic year. She had opened her individual season on international ground, running at the Xiamen and then Suzhou Diamond League meets. The American had lukewarm outings both times, failing to make it to the top step of the podium.
However, the American delivered while running on home ground. Lining up at the Hayward Field in Eugene Oregan, Sha'Carri Richardson outran a dense field that included Elaine Thompson-Herah, Twanisha Terry, Dina Asher-Smith, and more to clinch her first gold of the year.
Before getting down to business at the Prefontaine Classic, Richardson took some time to show off her new nails to USATF's ‘nail cam.’ In the video, the sprinter posed her hands in front of the camera and gave fans a close look at her latest nail design, which included purple tinged with hints of blue and topped off with silver accessories. Talking of the theme of her nails, the 24-year-old said,
“It's giving Game of Thrones, Khaleesi vibes.”

Sha'Carri Richardson on the inspiration behind her nails and fashion
Sha'Carri Richardson is a true force to be reckoned with on the track. The sixth fastest woman in the history of the 100m, the American is a two-time World Champion and will likely be making her Olympic debut later this year at the Paris Games. However, what sets the sprinter apart from others on track with her is her bold self-expression, whether it be long stiletto nails or bright orange.
Speaking on the inspiration behind her long nails, which some fans often find impractical, Richardson credited her grandmother and mother,
“Honestly it comes from my grandmother. She wore and grew her natural nails very very long. And not even just her, I would say my mom, she always kept up a certain look. I was just like ‘okay, you step out somewhere you're going to be seen, make sure you're able to accept the challenge’,” she told Andscape in a 2021 interview.
Sha'Carri Richardson also went on to name Florence Griffith-Joyner as one of her inspirations.
“Of course the amazing Flo-Jo. Everytime she steps on the track, and she's the greatest to ever do what I've done, she made sure she did it in style, it was graceful, and everything above. She did everything you thought she couldn't do and she did it in a way you thought she couldn't. Every time I step on the track I'm going to show you long nails, a different color hair. As long as my community loves it, I'ma bring it every time.”
For now, Sha'Carri Richardson continues to stun fans with both her fiery performances on track and her bold choices off of it.
