Skye Blakely broke into tears as she received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Target Center in Minneapolis, where the US Gymnastics Olympic trials are being held. This comes after she was forced to pull out of her Olympic bid due to an Achilles injury she sustained on June 26, Wednesday.
The 19-year-old was looking to make her Olympic debut in Paris following her impressive performances so far this year. However, the injury slowed her down and she has been forced to withdraw from the trials.
Skye Blakely ruptured her right Achilles while practicing a tumbling pass-on-floor exercise. This is the second time the teenager has had her dreams cut short. Minutes before the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games trials, the youngster tore an elbow ligament while warming up and had to undergo surgery.
In a video shared on X, Skye Blakely was applauded by the crowd, who cheered her on as she stood in the middle of the arena.
She stood there with her right leg plastered, holding onto crutches with one hand and using the other to wipe her tears as she waved to the crowd.
However, Blakely is eligible to petition for a spot in the team following her second-place finish at the second-place finish at the recent US national championships but it is uncertain whether she will be fully fit to represent the US in Paris.
