Reigning all-around Olympic champion, Suni Lee, has taken the world by storm as a video of her performing the uneven bars routine during the podium training went viral. In the clip, Lee could be seen executing the Bhardwaj and Van Leeuwen sequence flawlessly.
Lee, 21, is one of the leading contenders for the United States at the Paris Olympics. She made it to the Team USA gymnastics quintet for the Paris Olympics after finishing second at the US Olympic Trials. Lee, along with Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey, will be leading the team gymnastics at the French Games with at least one quadrennial event experience under their belt, whereas Hezly Rivera will be joining them in her maiden Summer Games event.
Lee and her team are scheduled to perform on Sunday, July 28, for their first event in Paris during the women's qualification round at the Bercy Arena. The Minnesota native has begun her podium training, and she was seen working on the Nabieva, Bhardwaj, and Van Leeuwen sequences for the uneven bars routines. The latter combination makes her uneven bars one of the hardest routines, where Nabieva is the toe-on layout Tkatchev, full-twisting Pak makes the Bhardwaj, and the toe-on Shaposhnikova 1/2 transforms into Van Leeuwen.
The video of her executing the sequence was shared by Poor Lawyer on his X handle (formerly Twiter). He wrote:
"A view of Suni Lee’s 6.6 bar routine!"
Astounded by Suni Lee's gymnastics excellence, he further tweeted:
"The Bhardwaj + Van Leuwen connection is insane. I never thought I’d see it until Suni Lee performed it."
"We really want a team gold" - Suni Lee aims for the top spot on the podium in Paris
Suni Lee's journey to the Paris Olympics team was a turbulent ride, as she was uncertain about her qualification after she was diagnosed with a kidney-related condition. However, her score of 111.675 and the second-place finish at the US Olympic Trials secured her ticket to the second Olympics event.
Now the gymnast is aiming for gold at the French event, especially in the team event. Speaking about which she said (via Olympics.com):
"I think that we really want a team gold. This is the same team basically as 2020,so it's kind of like a redemption tour."
She also admitted that she wasn't mentally prepared for the Olympics, as she wanted to be healthy once again a few months before the Olympic trials.
