Simone Biles is widely regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, having won 11 Olympic and 30 World Championships medals. Recently, the 27-year-old shared her opinion on who she thinks is the ultimate GOAT across various sports.
For Biles, 2024 was an incredible season, as she won three golds and one silver medal at the Paris Olympics, solidifying her status as the most decorated gymnast to ever grace the sport. For her achievements, the American was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year on January 2.
On Tuesday (January 7), Biles attended the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year awards ceremony, and on the red carpet, she gave her verdict on who is the ultimate GOAT.
The interviewer starts by asking the gymnast to pick between Michael Jordan and LeBron James, and she sides with the later, saying,
“I grew up with LeBron James, so I have to say LeBron James.”
The choice, then, was between James and Diana Taurasi, to which Biles replied:
“We're going to go with women's sports, so Diana.”
The American picked the basketball star over Tiger Woods as well, before picking tennis legend Serena Williams over her, saying:
“Oh I love Serena. So Serena Williams.”
The interviewed then asked Simone Biles to choose herself and Williams, causing her to giggle and reply:
“Both. We can both win.”
Simone Biles thanks her friends and family in SI Sportsperson of the Year award speech
For Simone Biles, 2024 was a year to remember. Three years after withdrawing from multiple finals at the Tokyo Olympics, the American made a remarkable comeback at the Paris Games last year. She helped the USA reclaim the team gold medal, and finished on top of the podium in the all-around and vault events individually.
For her accomplishments, Biles was honoured as SI’s Sportsperson of the Year and in her speech accepting the award, she extended her gratitude to her friends and family, saying,
“Thank you Sports Illustrated for this incredible honor. I'm truly excited to be up here especially with Aly (Raisman) presenting. I share this award with my family and my friends as they have been with me every step of the way and I'm truly grateful for their love and support. I also want to shout out to my coaches Cecil and Laurent because I couldn't have done this without you guys.”
“People think of gymnastics as an individual sport but I wouldn't be here without my team. Their care and support as an athlete means more than I could possibly express. To my husband Jonathan, thank you for being with me through the highs and the lows and always being by my side no matter what. I'd also like to give a shout out to my friends at ‘Friends of the Children’ who continue to be a source of inspiration each and every day,” she added.
After the Paris Olympics, Simone Biles wrapped up her 2024 with the second iteration of the Gold Over America Tour, performing 32 shows over the course of one and a half months.
