Simone Biles extended support to her fellow WCC teammate Jordan Chiles amid her fight to keep the Olympic bronze medal she earned for her floor routine. Biles also shared that the unfortunate incident was the first in gymnastics history.
Simone Biles competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics and extended her gold medal tally to seven after winning in the team, all-around, and vault. In the floor exercise, she trailed Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade in silver and Jordan Chiles won the bronze. Chiles initially finished fifth with 13.666 but was upgraded to third after her team appealed for a review and additional points for one of her leaps.
Romanian Ana Barbosu, who initially finished third, was demoted. This decision prompted the Romanian Gymnastics Federation to appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sports, arguing that Team USA's appeal was not submitted within the one-minute deadline.
Soon after, CAS ruled in favor of Barbosu, and IOC ordered Chiles to forfeit her bronze. However, the US gymnast refused to give up her medal and received support from her fellow Olympian, Simone Biles. The latter exclusively spoke to People and shared that the unfortunate incident doesn't change how well Chiles performed in the floor routine.
“We saw what you did. And it’s an unfortunate circumstance because something like this has never happened before and it’s truly a shame, but we wish all three girls could get the medal and unfortunately in gymnastics that’s not the case," said the seven-time Olympic gold medalist.
She objected to the procedure of ruling and demanded justice for her fellow gymnast and friend.
"Do we think they did the correct procedures to come to this ruling? No. That’s really why we want that justice for Jordan and why we’re going to keep supporting her and uplifting her.”
Simone Biles uplifted Jordan Chiles with little things after the latter's exit from social media
Simone Biles has been Chiles' pillar of strength during her tough days. The latter momentarily exited social media to keep her mental health in check but is often uplifted by Biles, who shared relatable things.
"I know she’s not on social media, but some of the funny things I’ve seen, I said, ‘Okay, Jordan, can I send you something that I think you would really like right now?’ And so I’ve sent her little things, and it was like one of them was these four or five girls guarding a medal, and I thought that was the cutest. And then I sent her Flavor Flav’s bronze [medal he made for her] and then I sent her LeBron [James]’s tweet," she said. (via People)
Chiles has remained steadfast in her decision to keep her medal and Team USA decided to take the case to the Swiss Federal Tribunal. In other news, Ana Barbosu received the bronze in a medal ceremony in Bucharest, Romania.
