Missy Franklin called off her swimming career in December 2018 due to an injury. She has since been working as an ambassador for the USA Swimming Foundation, principal spokesperson for 'Saving Lives Is Always in Season', and is a mother to a 2-year-old daughter.
Franklin rose to the limelight at the 2011 World Championships, winning five medals including three golds. Later that year in October, she set her first world record at the 2011 FINA Swimming World Cup in the 200m backstroke. She posted a time of 2:00.03 to better Shiko Sakai's previous mark of 2:00.13.
The American qualified in seven events for the 2012 London Olympics and went on to win four of those with two world records, one American record, and one Olympic record. She also won the bronze medal at the London Olympics. However, Franklin didn't enjoy the same success at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Missy Franklin couldn't qualify for finals in any individual event at the Rio Olympics. However, she managed to win gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Franklin announced retirement in December 2018 and is now working as an ambassador for the USA Swimming Foundation.
Along with being a principal spokesperson of 'Saving Lives Is Always in Season', Franklin is also part of Laureus Sport for Good's Global and runs a YouTube podcast, Unfiltered Waters, with fellow swimmer, Katie Hoff.
Before her retirement in December 2018, Missy Franklin got engaged to Hayes Johnson, who is also a swimmer. They married in September 2019 and welcomed their first child, Sarah Caitlin Johnson, in August 2021.

Missy Franklin won a combined 45 medals (23 gold) in the Olympic and World Championships. While she retired at a relatively young age, the 29-year-old has been connected with the sport in one way or the other.
Speaking with "Mile High Sports" in a recent interview, Franklin claimed she could give back a lot to the sport but added that she was focused on raising her daughter in a good environment for now.
"I can give back to the sport that gave me so much. But my husband and I moved to Nashville about two years ago in February, because he’s one of six children and almost his entire family is here in Nashville. We wanted to give Caitlin that chance to grow up with her aunts and uncles and cousins and her grandparents," she expressed.
She further said:
"From the professional standpoint, I’m still staying super involved in the sport. I’m still an ambassador for the USA Swimming Foundation, and I’m very active with them. I do lots of work around some lessons and drowning prevention, which is super important to me."
Missy Franklin also claimed that being a mother was a dream job for her and that she was grateful for it.
