Gabby Douglas is one of the greatest American artistic gymnasts in history. Douglas rose to fame after her sensational gold-medal win in the women’s individual all-around at the 2012 London Olympics.

With this victory, she became the fourth American female gymnast to claim the individual all-around gold after Mary Lou Retton at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Carly Patterson at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and Nastia Liukin at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in the USA team's gold medal victory in the women's team all-around at the same Games.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Douglas contributed significantly to the United States’ gold-medal victory in the women’s team event, scoring 15.766 on the uneven bars. However, despite qualifying in third place for the individual all-around final, she was unable to compete due to the Olympic rule limiting participation to two gymnasts per country, as her teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman achieved higher scores.

After a heartbreaking end to her 2016 Rio Olympics campaign, Douglas took a break from the sport but did not announce her retirement from elite gymnastics. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old is now preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which will be played on home turf.

In an interview with E! News, she expressed gratitude for having a body that allows her to continue performing at the elite level in their sport. She said:

“I was super grateful, and still am, that I have the body type that I have, and I can still do it at the age of 28 and even at 32 in LA.”

She expressed satisfaction with her current ability to perform at the age of 28, and expressed confidence in her potential to continue competing even at 32, indicating her desire to make a comeback at the Los Angeles Olympics..

In an interview on Hallie Jackson NOW, Gabby Douglas revealed that watching the 2022 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships reignited her competitive spirit, inspiring her to contemplate a potential return to represent the USA once again.

In a bid to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Douglas made a triumphant return to competition after eight years at the 2024 American Classic in Katy, Texas, where she secured an 11th place finish with a tally of 50.650 points. Her best performance came in the vault, where she earned 14.000 points.

She then competed at the 2024 Core Hydration Classic, unfortunately withdrawing after a challenging performance on the uneven bars where she fell twice. She could only manage a score of 10.100.

Subsequently, an ankle injury sustained in May 2024, prior to the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, compelled Douglas to withdraw from the competition, effectively eliminating her chances of securing a place on the USA's five-member team for the Paris Olympics.
