Matilde Lorenzi was a 19-year-old Italian skier who died following a severe crash during a training session. She was the Italian junior national champion and had competed at last year’s World Junior Skiing Championships.
Lorenzi was deemed to be a promising talent in the skiing world and was part of the Italian Army Sports Division. She was also part of the junior women's team and came from Villarbasse, Italy.
During a training session on the Schnalstaler glacier in Val Senales, Northern Italy, the 19-year-old fell heavily on the hard piste but received immediate aid. She was taken via a helicopter to a hospital in Bolzano where the doctors declared that her condition was serious.
It was later found that she had suffered severe injuries in her head. The 19-year-old succumbed to her injuries on the morning of Tuesday (Oct. 29), as per the Italian Ministry of Defence.
The International Skip and Snowboard Federation mourned the young skier's death and offered condolences to her friends and family.
"The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) extends its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi, as announced by the Italian Ministry of Defense, who conveyed heartfelt condolences for the 19-year-old athlete of the Italian Army. FIS joins FISI President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community in mourning, including coaches, athletes, teammates, the federal council, and all FISI staff," it said in a statement.
"FISI is in mourning, standing by her family, friends, and everyone who cherished Matilde, honoring her memory today and always," it added.
Olympic champions Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin also offered their condolences to Lorenzi's family.
"This is a tragic loss. Sending my thoughts to her family. 🙏🏻💔," Vonn wrote.

A look at Matilde Lorenzi's skiing career
Matilde Lorenzi won the Italian junior national titles in the overall and Super G disciplines last year. She also competed at the FIS Europa Cup, with her best finish, 11th in Super G, coming in 2023 in St. Moritz.
At last year's World Junior Championships, she placed sixth in downhill and eighth in Super-G. Her sister, Lucrezia Lorenzi has raced in the World Cup series in slalom as well as the European Cup. She expressed 'immense grief' while announcing the death of her sister.
