Olympic medalist sprinter Fred Kerley recently landed himself in trouble due to his altercation with some Miami Police officials, for which he was briefly detained. However, his custody was extended due to a previous assault charge pressed by his spouse, Angelica Kerley.
According to an X post published by the Track and Field Gazette,
"Fred Kerley has been released from jail after posting his bond, charged with battery on an officer & resisting arrest in Miami earlier this week. His alleged domestic violence incident with his wife from last year was what kept him locked up longer."
Interestingly, the assault incident happened to occur in May. However, the charges against the incident were brought in only on the night Kerley was arrested by the Miami Police authorities. According to an X user,
"Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley, following his arrest on Thursday night, also faces charges of strangulation and robbery. A Miami-Dade PD spokesperson tells me that incident actually occurred in May (on his birthday), but the charges were brought to him after his arrest last night."
For the unversed, Fred Kerley is an American athlete who had won the silver medal in men's 100m at the Tokyo Olympics. Though he couldn't improve his position at the Paris Olympics, Kerley maintained his place on the podium as he clinched a bronze medal in the 100m finals, behind teammate Noah Lyles [who won the gold], and Kishane Thompson of Jamaica [who won the silver medal].
Fred Kerley's wife on why she pressed charges against him
While everyone was busy arguing over whether Fred Kerley was innocent or not, the assault charges filed by his wife Angelica Kerley gave a dramatic twist to this case. Kerley's wife later opened up on why she decided to file a case against him.
“They asked me to be here and speak on his behalf, but I want to proceed on pressing charges against him," she said in court.
In another conversation with CBS News, Kerley revealed that she got convinced that the Olympian hadn't changed at all, and it was necessary to press charges. She further added,
“Seeing the video of this recent incident and how like he was aggressive, it kind of made me think like he didn't feel any remorse for what he did to me. I know I have to think about my children but he didn't think about his children in that situation."
Fred Kerley has refused to speak up on the allegations, although he agreed to pay bonds of $5000 and $7500 respectively. However, his lawyers have termed the accusations as false, since Kerley is not ready to 'divorce' his estranged wife.
