Former Olympic gold medalist Madison Kocian was most recently studying at Baylor College of Medicine's School of Health Professions. Kocian was a part of the United States gymnastics team at the Rio Olympics along with Simone Biles and others.
Kocian featured in just one edition of the sporting event but it turned out to be a successful one for her. The then-teenager helped the United States clinch gold in the team event ahead of Russia and China.
She also won silver in the uneven bars event, finishing with a total of 15.833, which was marginally behind gold medalist Aliya Mustafina (15.900).
Madison Kocian also won three medals across two editions of the World Championships. She was part of the contingent that won the team event in the 2014 and 2015 editions of the tournament in Nanning and Glasgow respectively. Kocian's only individual medat at the World Championships came in 2015, when she clinched gold in the uneven bars event.
She represented the University of California in college gymnastics and helped them win the NCAA Championships in 2018 when the tournament took place in St Louis. The following year, Kocian was part of the team that finished third in Fort Worth.
She retired from gymnastics in 2020 and two years later, enrolled in the Physician Assistant Program of the Baylor College of Medicine's School of Health Professions as part of the Class of 2024.
Madison Kocian spoke out on Marta Karolyi's abusive methods
Madison Kocian was among the few gymnasts who spoke out on abuse in the wake of former team doctor Larry Nassar's allegations.
Kocian spoke out on former USA gymnastics coach Marta Karolyi's abusive coaching methods and said that the higher-ups in gymnastics oversaw them.
"There are still people at the top that I feel have overseen this issue for a long time and I think that needs to be changed as well as the whole culture around everything,” Kocian said as quoted by Gardian. “I don’t think enough has been changed from the coaching standpoint. There are still coaches under that abusive style of coaching whether it’s verbal abuse, that’s what enables all of this.”
Kocian's former coaches in gymnastics include the likes of Cecile Landi and Laurent Landi, both of whom still coach Simone Biles.
