June 30, the last day of the US Olympic trials, became the most-watched day of any Olympic qualifying events in eight years. This historic feat caught the eye of Simone Biles, who was performing on the same day.
The US Track and Field Olympic trials garnered 4.5m views on June 30, which is more than 38% of the eight nights of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic trials. Similarly, the US gymnastics trials gained a total of 8.2m views and an average of 7.6 million views across NBC.
June 30 was the last day of the trials for gymnastics and carried all women's qualification events, including the Women's Balance Beam, Women's Floor, Women's Uneven Bars, and Women's Vault. Olympian Simone Biles reacted to this and took a dig at those who question women's sports. She took to her Instagram story to share the news and wrote:
"Pssstttt. What's that thing they say about women's sports?"
Biles qualified for the Paris Olympics after her significant performances in the trials. She sealed her spot after scoring the highest points at 117.225. The 27-year-old is poised to represent her country for the third time at the Olympic stage.
Simone Biles wins Best Comeback Performance of the Year Award at ESPY 2024
Simone Biles won her third ESPY award on July 11. She won the Best Comeback Performance of the Year award at ESPY 2024. The gymnast made a notable comeback during the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Antwerp after facing multiple adversities during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
She went through a mental block during the 2020 Tokyo Games, which resulted in her withdrawal from several events. The Olympian went on a two-year hiatus and made her comeback by clinching four gold medals and one silver medal in Antwerp. After her comeback, she increased her Olympic and World medal tally to 37.
Simone Biles received appreciation from her mother Nellie Biles on X, for winning the ESPY award.
"@Simone_Biles: ESPY comeback athlete of the year award. WAY to go Simone."
She won two ESPY awards in 2017 — the Best US Female Olympian and the Best Female Athlete. In 2019 and 2021, she was nominated for the Best Female Athlete award but did not win. The four-time Olympic gold medalist will next be seen competing at the Paris Olympics, scheduled from July 26-August 11.
