Taiwanese controversial boxer Lin Yu Ting is set to face Svetlana Staneva as her next opponent in quarterfinal 1 at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, August 4.

The controversy surrounding her gender eligibility issues at the Paris Olympics intensified on Friday when Yu Ting beat Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan in the women's featherweight fight, with a score line of 5-0. Following that, the Uzbek was brought to tears and later left the ring without shaking hands with the Taiwanese.

Yu Ting was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after failing the International Boxing Association's gender eligibility test, but she was granted permission by the International Olympic Committee to participate at the Paris Olympics.

Despite the controversy and everything else in the background, she has advanced to the next round of the Paris Games and is ready to take on Svetlana Staneva to secure her spot in the semifinals.

As the clock ticks on the showdown, here is everything fans need to know about Yu Ting's next opponent:

A look into Svetlana Staneva's boxing career

The 2012 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships were one of the first major events where Svetlana Staneva competed professionally at 22. She then went on to participate at the 2014 Women's European Amateur Boxing Championships and bagged a silver.

In a bid to secure a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics, the athlete took part in the European Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament but could not qualify for the Games that year.

At the Women's European Amateur Boxing Championships in 2022, she secured the second silver medal of her career, and the following year, she finished third at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi, where Lin Yu Ting was disqualified from the competition that helped Staneva add a bronze to her featherweight kitty.

After winning silver at the 2023 European Games, she booked her spot to participate in the Paris Olympics. In the ongoing 2024 season, the 34-year-old boxer has won the first gold medal of her professional career after defeating Russia's Daria Abramova at the European Amateur Boxing Championships back in April.
