Who is Micah Christenson? Everything to know about the American setter leading the volleyball team in Paris Olympics

Micah Christenson is an American volleyball player who is currently contributing to his team's efforts to secure a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He also contributed to the USA men's volleyball team's victory at the previous Olympics and World Championships.

Christenson represents the Russian Volleyball Club "Zenit-Kazan" and competes in the Super League.


Micah Christenson's volleyball career

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Robert and Charlene on May 8, 1993, Micah Christenson commenced his sports career as a basketball and volleyball player for Kamehameha Schools Kapālama in Honolulu while pursuing his graduation. He later enrolled at the University of Southern California and represented the USC Trojans men's volleyball team where he was a four-year starter and three-year co-captain.

After representing the U.S. Junior National Team in 2011 and 2012, Christenson was selected for the U.S. National Team in 2013, becoming the youngest starting setter to compete for the team. He also signed with the Kazain-based team competing in the Russian Super League in 2021 for two years.


Micah Christenson's family

Micah Christenson comes from a sports-oriented family. His father, Robert played basketball at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. His mother, Charlene secured three national volleyball championships and is a two-time All-American. His sister, Joanna played volleyball at Southern Utah University while pursuing a degree in psychology.

Furhere, Christenson's wife, Brookie Fournier is a former collegiate volleyball player and played both indoor and beach volleyball. She represented the Arkansas team before moving to USC where she pursued a degree in human biology. The two tied the knot after the 2016 Rio Olympics and have three children - Ezekiel Kūpa (born in 2018), Quinn (born in 2020) and Finley (born in 2023).


Micah Christenson's achievements

Micah Christenson secured the bronze medal as part of the national team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He represented the national volleyball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where they had to settle for 10th place. He also contributed to the national team's success at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, securing a bronze medal after defeating Serbia.

Along with the rest of the team, Christenson has earned gold medals at the FIVB World Cup twice, in 2015 and 2023. While playing on the Junior National Team, he led the squad to the 2012 NORCECA Men's Junior Continental Championship title, held in Colorado Springs.

The USA men's volleyball team is making strides at the Paris Olympics, having secured two victories over Argentina and Germany, 3-0 and 3-2, respectively. They will lock horns with Japan in the next match of Pool C on August 2, 2024.
