Simone Biles made history for the United States by becoming the nation's most decorated gymnast of all time, contributing to the USA’s gold-medal victory in the women’s team all-around at the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 30. With her eighth medal, she surpassed Shannon Miller's previous record of seven Olympic medals.
After her performance in the team event, she then added another individual all-around title on August 1 to her collection to become the first gymnast to achieve this feat since Vera Caslavska in 1964 and 1968.
Following Biles’ victory in the women’s team all-around event, Jonathan Owens shared a picture of the two together, where he can be seen wearing the gold medal that Biles won around his neck. He captioned the post on Instagram:
“Witnessing history every time you step on the mat 😍🔥 Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful i was there to see it ❤️🤍💙”
Fans were quick to respond to this Instagram post shared by the Chicago Bears’ safety. One fan jokinglt questioned why Owens was wearing the gold medal like he was the one who had won it, stating:
“why he holding it like he won it”
Another fan suggested that this picture reminded them of a spouse displaying their military partner’s achievements although they didn't personally earn them, saying:
“You do realize that is not your medal… right? This is giving military wife vibes”
Another fan criticized Owens for wearing Simone Biles’ medal since he had once called himself the catch in their relationship on the “The Pivot” podcast.
“Mr. I’m the prize wants to wear her prize…… I’m not surprised 😒”, they said.
Here are some other reactions that the post generated:
“The jokes write themselves every time lmaooooooo,” a fan wrote.
"There’s something very unsettling about you wearing her medal. Seems off. Give it back to her immediately 🥇".
“Thank you for starting to recognize that SIMONE is the famous one ❤️❤️”, another fan added.
