After three days of non-stop action at the Oriental Sports Center between Oct 18-20, the first Swimming World Cup 2024 meet comes to a conclusion. This was the first of three meets of the event, and the next meet will take place in Incheon, South Korea between Oct. 24 and 26.
The Shanghai event saw US swimmer Kate Douglass top the charts among the female swimmers. Douglass accumulated 59.1 points in the event with four victories in the 50m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 100m medley and 200m medley events.
Douglass' compatriot, Regan Smith, narrowly missed out on the top position by a margin of 0.1 point. Smith finished the Shanghai meet with 59 points courtesy of her victories in the 200m butterfly and 200m backstroke events.
She also clinched a second-place finish in the 50m backstroke event. Moreover, the Minnesota native had also qualified for the finals of the 100m butterfly event on the third day but didn't contest it. Beata Nelson was the third American swimmer who managed a top-10 finish in the rankings after the first stop of the Swimming World Cup.
Among the male participants, French swimmer and five-time Olympic medalist Leon Marchand grabbed the top position with 58.3 points. The 22-year-old won three events in the Shanghai meet- 100m, 200m, and 400 Individual Medleys(IM). On the second day of the World Cup, Marchand also clocked a World Cup record time over the 200m IM event (1:50.3).
Switzerland's Noe Ponti finished just 1.5 points behind Marchand in the event. Ponti won two competitions- 50m butterfly, and 100m butterfly and registered two more top-three podium finishes in the 200m medley and 100m medley events.
