The first stop of the Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai saw breathtaking action return to the pool as several international stars rewrote the history books over the last three days. The highlight of Day 3 was the world record swim in the men's 50m butterfly heats by Switzerland’s Noe Ponti, who later took the gold medal as well with an identical swim.
France’s Leon Marchand continued his dominance, winning his third title on day 3 of the competition. The Olympic champion in the 400m Individual Medley LCM (long course), clocked a new personal best of 4:00:03s for the gold medal in the short course. With two medals already to his name, Marchand topped the men's rankings as the first stop concluded.
Regan Smith scratched from the 200m freestyle finals to focus on the 200m backstroke, where she swam the third fastest time in American history. She won the gold medal in 2:00.42s followed by Anastasiya Shkurdai for second in 2:01.31s.
Another top-performing American swimmer on day 3 of the Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2024 was Kate Douglass. Carrying the momentum from her Paris Olympics success, she took the gold medal in the women's 200m IM in 2:04.09s.
