Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has won the World Athletics Female Track Athlete of the Year award following an incredible 2024 season that saw her win two Olympic gold medals and set two 400m hurdles world records. The American hurdler beat 100m Olympic champion Julien Alfred for the award but lost out to Sifan Hassan for the Overall Female Athlete of The Year honor.
Hasan won the gold medal in the women's marathon at the Paris Olympics and bronze in the 5000m and 10000m races. She became the first woman to win medals in all three distances at the same Games and was also awarded the Women’s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year award.
Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh was crowned the Female Field Athlete of The Year following an illustrious season. She set a new high jump world record of 2.10m and won the gold medal in the discipline at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 23-year-old also won the Diamond League trophy, the European Championships, and a silver at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
Meanwhile, Botswana's Letsile Tebogo was crowned the Male Track Athlete of The Year following his record-breaking 2024 season. He started off with a world record in the 300m before shocking USA's Noah Lyles in the 200m final at the Paris Olympics.
Tebogo ran an African record of 19.46s to win the first sprinting gold medal for the continent. He also led the country's 4x400m relay team to a silver medal before winning back-to-back Diamond League races. The 21-year-old was also awarded the Overall Male Athlete of The Year award, beating the pole vault world record holder Mondo Duplantis.
Duplantis won the Male Field Athlete of The Year for the third consecutive year for his record-breaking season. Alongside winning the Olympic gold and the Diamond League, the Swedish icon broke the world record three times in the season.
Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola was crowned the World Athletics Male Out of Stadium Athlete of The Year for his marathon win at the Paris Olympics. He clocked an Olympic record of 2:06:26 to win his maiden Olympic gold medal.
U20 stars Sembo Almayew and Mattia Furlani awarded the World Athletics Rising Star of 2024 award
Sembo Almayew is a 19-year-old Ethiopian runner who won the World Athletics Female Rising Star of 2024 award from World Athletics following a breakthrough season. She became the first Ethiopian to win a U20 world title in the 3000m steeplechase before an inspiring run at the Paris Olympics saw her finish fifth.
Mattia Furlani meanwhile won a bronze medal in the long jump at the Olympic Games before extending his U20 world record to 8.38m at the European Championships in Rome, where he won the silver medal. He also won a silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
