Katie Ledecky delivered another dominant performance in the 1500m freestyle at the Paris Olympics 2024, winning her second gold medal in the distance in a new Olympic record time. While Ledecky was ahead in one direction, most of the other swimmers were lagging behind, and going in the other direction, leaving fans in awe of the American swimmer’s greatness.

Ledecky kicked off her Paris Olympics campaign with the 400m freestyle, where she won the bronze medal behind Ariarne Titmus. As the 27-year-old moved to her premier event, the 1500m freestyle, Ledecky was the favorite for the gold, and she did win it quite easily.

The 12-time Olympic medalist clocked eight fastest times of her career to set a new Olympic record in 15:30.02. She held the previous Olympic record of 15:30.35 as well. Ledecky won the race 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher Anastasiia Kripichnikova.

Katie Ledecky took the lead in the first 50m only, and as she reached the 500m mark, the 27-year-old started lapping the other swimmers. Fans online were in awe of the American swimmer's dominance in the most grueling event, with one of them writing:

"Making it to the OLYMPICS only to see Katie Ledecky swimming past you in the opposite direction has to be an incredibly humbling feeling."
"Katie Ledecky is so good at the 1500 you often wonder if anyone else is in the pool," another fan wrote.
"Katie Ledecky being so much faster than her competition that she’s the only swimmer on the screen will never not be crazy to me," a user commented.

A user had a hilarious reaction to Ledecky's dominance, writing:

"She could stop and say "hey" and still win."
"Katie Ledecky going one direction and the other Olympians going the other direction, Volume 4," another fan wrote.
"BC has moved to the All-22 cam so Katie Ledecky's competition can stay in the frame," a user noted.

Ledecky won her first Olympic medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She took the gold in the 800m freestyle, and at the following two Olympic Games, the 27-year-old won the event both times. If she wins the 800m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she will become the first female swimmer to win a single event at four Olympic Games. Only second in history after Michael Phelps.

Even if Ledecky doesn't win the 800m gold, she isn't coming out of the pool without a medal. With her 1500m freestyle gold, the 27-year-old tied with Jenny Thompson and Darra Torres as the most decorated female swimmer of all time. A medal in 800m freestyle, will make her the greatest.
