Coach Michael Itkin

Misha Itkin, also known as Michael, is Nick's father and a seasoned fencing coach with a rich background in the sport. Originating from Ukraine, Michael's passion for fencing led him to establish the Los Angeles International Fencing Center (LAIFC) in 2003. With a wealth of experience as a former elite fencer and a Ph.D. in physical education, Michael's coaching expertise is highly esteemed.

Upon immigrating to the United States in 1992, Michael faced initial challenges but remained determined to pursue his coaching aspirations. He worked diligently, balancing various jobs while attending English classes in the evenings. In 1997, Michael opened his first fencing studio, beginning his coaching career. Over the years, he has successfully coached numerous athletes, including US Olympic and World Championship team members.

Coach Igor Zapozdaev

Igor Zapozdaev, another influential figure in Nick's fencing journey, brings a wealth of experience and expertise. With a background as a former member of the Russian National Team and multiple championships under his belt, Igor is well-equipped to guide aspiring fencers to success. Since joining LAIFC in 2013, Igor has played a pivotal role in training students who have succeeded in national and international tournaments. With a Master's Degree in Physical Education from Lesgaft National State University in St. Petersburg, Igor's coaching approach is grounded in both theory and practice.

Nick Itkin's Accomplishments in Fencing Career

In the World Championships, his recent achievements include winning the silver medal in the Individual Foil event in 2023 and securing a fourth-place finish in the Team Foil event. Throughout his career, Nick has earned a total of three medals at the World Championships, including two silver and one bronze. His silver medals were achieved in 2023 for the Individual Foil event and in 2022 for the Team Foil event, while he secured a bronze medal in the Individual Foil event in 2022.
