He was born on April 2, 1996, in Rosemount, Minnesota. Standing at 6'4", he competed for North Dakota State University from 2014 to 2018, where he set the college indoor shot put record and won NCAA indoor titles in both shot put and weight throw in 2019.

Otterdahl's international career includes a 10th-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021) and a 5th-place finish at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
