While Sha'Carri Richardson is the fastest sprinter in the world in 2024, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce remains an all-time great. The two have shared the track seven times, and more or less, it's been an even contest.
Richardson rose to prominence in 2019 with a record-breaking collegiate performance of 10.75s. In the same year, she turned pro and faced Fraser-Pryce at the Prefontaine Classic. Both missed out on the podium as Richardson settled for fourth in 11.15s while the Jamaican touched the finish line in 11.39s.
They met two years later at the Muller Grand Prix, where Richardson got the better of the Olympic champion again. She finished second in 11.44s while Fraser-Pryce came home fourth in 11.52s. Earlier in the meet, they faced in the 100m heats, with Richardson coming out on top again.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce got the better of Sha'Carri Richardson for the first time at the 2021 Prefontaine Classic, finishing second in 10.73s, as the American came home last in 11.14s. The Jamaican won their next two encounters as well, both of which took place in September 2022. Fraser-Pryce clocked a blistering 10.65s in one of those races.
Richardson returned to form in 2023 and has been the sprinter to beat since then. She faced Fraser-Pryce in the 100m finals at the World Championships and ran a lifetime best of 10.65s to lift her first World title. The Jamaican settled for bronze in 10.77s, handing the head-to-head lead of 4-3 to the American.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is Sha'Carri Richardson's inspiration
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her first Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sha'Carri Richardson was eight years old at the time. She grew up watching the Jamaican before beating her for the World title in Budapest last year.
"She’s an amazing athlete. I grew up watching her,” she told reporters after her win in 2023 (via Yahoo News).
Richardson added that she knew it would need her best effort to beat Fraser-Pryce.
“It was going to take my best to come forward and be able to compete, knowing that she’s been doing this and can continue to be on the podium every single time. It shows me that I have a journey. I have something to do. I have more to do,” Richardson added.
The two are set for another epic battle at the Paris Olympics 2024, where Sha'Carri Richardson will be eying her maiden Olympic medal while Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will be looking to cap off her career with her fourth Olympic gold.
