Simone Biles and Suni Lee have rarely faced each other. The latter rose to the occasion at the Tokyo Olympics to win the all-around gold medal in Biles’ absence, and when Biles made a comeback in 2023, Lee was out of the competition as she was nursing a kidney ailment.
Biles and Lee featured together at last week's U.S. Classic 2024. While it marked the first competition of the year for the seven-time Olympic gold medalist, Suni Lee previously featured at the American Classic as well as the Winter Cup in February.
Lee fell twice at the Winter Cup 2024 on her return to competitive gymnastics. At the American Classic, the Tokyo Olympics champion competed only on the balance beam and uneven bars, earning national qualification in both events. At the U.S Classic, Lee won the balance beam gold medal ahead of Simone Biles after earning a score of 14.600 over the latter's 14.550.
Lee's puzzle pieces are finally coming together but Biles once again demonstrated remarkable talent at the U.S Classic. Alongside the all-around gold medal, she won the floor exercise competition as well, in which her routine featured Taylor Swift music at the start.
Suni Lee will be the favorite once again on the balance beam but other than that, Simone Biles will highly likely lead the way. Given the recent performances of the last two all-around Olympic champions, Biles will be the favorite to win the all-around title while Lee will be expected to make it to the top performers list.
Prediction: Simone Biles
Simone Biles is an inspiration to Suni Lee
In Simone Biles' absence at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Suni Lee won the gold medal in the all-around competition. Although the two gymnasts are competing for the same prize now, the former Auburn student has looked up to Biles with admiration.
Speaking with KPRC 2 at the Team USA Media Summit, Lee expressed that Biles was someone who had been continuously inspiring her. She explained:
"I’m really close to Jordan, And I admire Simone [very] much. Everything that she’s been through. She’s such a great example and she continues to shine and every time we see her she gets better and better."
"Simone is someone who continuously inspires me and I look up to her a lot just because she just continues to get better and better every single time that we see her and all of the things that she’s gone through are truly inspiring,” Lee added.
Simone Biles and Suni Lee are among the favorites to make it to the U.S. National team for the Paris Olympics 2024. Some of the other top contenders for an Olympic berth include Gabby Douglas, Shilese Jones, and Jade Carey.
