Despite being an Italian native, he represented the U.S. Men's Volleyball National Team, making his Olympic debut in 2016. Team USA ended up in 3rd place, winning the bronze medal.

Growing up, Thomas had an interest in golf during his high school days at Wheaton Warrenville South before transitioning to volleyball after joining Loyola University Chicago. During his spell with the Ramblers, Thomas won various awards, such as two NCAA National Championships, the MVP Award, and the AVCA Award in 2015.

He was offered a professional deal by Asseco Resovia in Poland in 2015, which he accepted, causing him to put a hold on his studies. In 2020, Thomas returned to complete his studies and missed out on the World Championship. Two years after making his Olympic debut, he suffered a setback with an ACL injury that occurred during a match against Team Serbia while attempting a spike.
