Dominique Moceanu is a former American gymnast who bid farewell to the sport in 2000 after falling short of earning a spot in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. After a remarkable gymnastics career, Moceanu continues to pour her passion into her beloved sport as a dedicated coach at her own training center.
At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, she secured a gold medal in the team event along with Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps, and Kerri Strug. The Amercian squad defeated the Russian and the Romanian teams to achieve this feat.
Moceanu was part of the first U.S. women’s gymnastics team to clinch an Olympic team gold medal. After missing the qualification for the 2000 Olympics, she transitioned to coaching gymnastics. The former American gymnast now resides in Ohio with her family and trains youngsters at the Dominique Moceanu Gymnastics Center in Medina.
The 42-year-old also trains her 2009-born son Vincent Canales, who is all set to follow in his mother's footsteps and pursue gymnastics. Moceanu displayed her prospect as a resilient gymnast at the 1996 Olympics.
She suffered a stress fracture in her right tibia at the 1996 U.S. National Championships, which forced her to settle in third place and withdraw from the Olympic Trials. Unfazed by the adversity, she applied for a petition based on the scores she bagged at the National Championships.
She was seen competing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, sporting a bandaged leg. She replaced Kerri Strug in the all-around finals after the latter sustained an ankle injury.
