
William Coleman is a professional American equestrian. He started riding at the age of 6. He hails from Locust Valley, New York. He competed in the Individual and Team eventing events at the 2012 Summer Olympics. When he was six years old, his family moved to Charlottesville, VA, where he began riding with the Virginia Piedmont Hunt. William focused on eventing and trained with Karen and David O’Connor after graduating from Woodberry Forest School.
At 18, William won a gold medal at the North American Young Riders Championship in 2001. At 20, William was considered for the US Olympic team for the Athens Games, but his horse, Fox In Flight, was injured and unable to qualify. In 2004, he competed with Second Hope at Rolex Kentucky and finished as the top young rider. In 2005, he started attending the University of Virginia, which led him to sell some of his top horses and take a break from competing to focus on his education, but he continued to improve his riding skills by taking lessons from top riders like Gerd Reuter, Anne Kursinski, and Wiljan Laraakers. In 2012, William placed fourth at Rolex Kentucky CCI4 with Twizell, and got a spot on the US team for the London Olympics. In 2021, he made history by winning the CHIO Aachen Nations Cup with Off the Record, and he was the first American event rider to win in Aachen.
