William Bender, born on June 9, 2001, is a Vermont native who will be competing in his first Olympics with the USA rowing team. Bender didn’t start rowing until he was 14 while at Hanover High School. He was also the captain of the ski team and followed his brother Ryan Bender’s journey; Ryan rowed at Colgate for four years. Bender started her professional career under coach Wyatt Allen who won a gold medal at the Athens Olympics games in 2004. He started his collegiate journey at Dartmouth Engineering and was expected to graduate this spring.
Bender received his first bronze medal at the 2021 IRA National Championships and was part of the U.S. Under-23 roster. Last summer, Bender was placed fifth in the World Rowing Championships alongside Evan Olson. He paired up with Dartmouth alumnus Oliver Bub to represent the nation in the men’s pair at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Bender won his first gold during the US Rowing Senior National Team Trials alongside Bub in 2023 with a time of six minutes, 54.64 seconds which was enough to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
