Zain Allen Retherford born on May 21, 1995, is an American freestyle and folkstyle wrestler competing at 70 kilograms. He has earned gold and silver medals at the World Championships and is a Pan-American champion. He is one of the most successful Penn State Nittany Lion wrestlers. Zain has won the Dan Hodge Trophy twice and he is also a three-time NCAA Division I National champion.
He was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and raised in Benton, Pennsylvania, he attended Line Mountain Jr./Sr. High School, where he won a State Title as a freshman and took third as a sophomore. He transferred to Benton High School, ending his high school career with a 131–3 record and two state titles.
In college, Zain was ranked the 3rd recruit in 2012 and he went to Penn State University. As a freshman in the 2013-14 season, he went 27–0 but placed fifth at the NCAA Championships. The following year, he decided to focus on freestyle, he was placed second at the Junior World Team Trials and fourth at the 2015 Dave Schultz Memorial International. In the 2015-16 season, he moved up to 149 pounds, won the Big Ten Championship, and got his first NCAA title. Zain was named NCAA Most Dominant Wrestler and also received several other accolades.
In the 2016-17 season, Zain won another NCAA Championship, the Dan Hodge Trophy, and numerous awards. As a senior in the 2017-18 season, he maintained his record, winning his third-straight NCAA and Big Ten titles, and he became the fourth person to win the Dan Hodge Trophy twice. His career at Penn State ended with a 128–3 record. In 2019, Zain won a gold medal at the World Cup and the US World Team Trials, and a silver medal at the U.S. Open Championship. In 2020, he won a bronze medal at the Pan American Wrestling Olympic Qualification and the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series. In 2023, Zain won the gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade by defeating Iranian wrestler Amir Mohammad Yazdani.
