Ella Johnson and Johnny Chao appeared in the fifth installment of TLC's coveted show, 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days in 2021-2022. Ella, an Idaho resident, fell in love with Johnny, a divorced father from Jinan, China. Season 5 documented their journey and the obstacles they faced while engaging in a long-distance relationship.
Although Ella and Johnny cared for each other, several issues, including distance and infidelity, challenged their relationship. While Ella wished to see Johnny in person, he kept delaying his arrival to America due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tensions reached a boiling point when Ella confessed that she had cheated on Johnny.
Since their appearance on the show, Ella and Johnny have been in an on-and-off relationship. Although they split after filming 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, they reunited in 2023 after Johnny visited Ella in America. However, their reunion was short-lived. Johnny took to Instagram to reveal that he had returned to China after a few months.
Since his return, both Ella and Johnny have remained silent about their relationship status. However, in December 2024, Ella took to Instagram to share a video, where a voice was heard saying, "I think I was made to love, not to be loved." Although their relationship status is unknown, fans wonder if they parted ways.
90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days: Ella and Johnny's post-show journey
Ella and Johnny were still dating during the Tell All which was released in April 2022. However, Ella took to Instagram only after a few months to share a relationship update. On September 11, 2022, the 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days cast member posted a video where she revealed that Johnny and her had parted ways.
She informed fans that she ended things with Johnny, unwilling to wait for him to come to America.
"I'm really gonna miss him, but I really don't wanna keep waiting forever for him to come around," she said.
Ella decided not to reminisce about her relationship, instead focusing on herself. During her time on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, she was often ridiculed for her weight. Johnny bought Chinese medicine for her and promised to cook her healthy meals once he came to America.
The consistent discussion about her weight bothered Ella, who joined a gym after the breakup and made weight loss her priority. The female cast member frequently shared before-and-after pictures to document how much she had reworked herself.
In July 2023, Ella's life took a turn when Johnny reached the U.S.A. after spending 12 hours on flights. Although he stayed with Ella, the couple wasn't officially back together. Ella frequently posted pictures and videos of Johnny on her Instagram handle, documenting their time together.
In a post shared on August 20, 2023, Ella wrote:
"I am beyond happy beyond blessed and darn right, I will post about it. Being together is the best thing to ever happen for us!!! I love the new energy we fill each other with!!! I am also glad the pups love him just as much as I do."
However, Ella's happiness was short-lived. Towards the end of August 2023, Johnny returned to China. In an Instagram post, shared on August 28, 2023, Johnny wrote that he decided to return home "for a while" to "prepare more money." However, he reassured fans that he would soon make his way back to the States.
Since his return, the 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days couple has kept their relationship status under wraps. However, on December 7, 2024, Ella shared a video on Instagram that left fans wondering if the pair had parted ways.
It was a montage with a voice in the background that said:
"I just can't help but wonder, seeing all of my friends in love if I will ever feel that or if I wasn't made to be loved."

Ella, an admirer of Asian culture, confessed she hit the "jackpot" when she had met Johnny. She wished Johnny would embody the physical attributes of her favorite anime character. Even though he did not have green eyes or red hair, Ella was happy to have him in her life.
The 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days female cast member hoped Johnny would visit and stay with her for a while so they could get to know each other better. However, Johnny hesitated to fly during the pandemic, worried he would get infected and put his child and parents at risk.
Ella suggested they meet in Dubai if the U.S. was not viable. Johnny wasn't keen on traveling to Dubai either since he would have to quarantine for five weeks before returning home. The 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days star feared he would lose his job if he remained absent for so long.
The lack of physical attention bothered Ella and she ultimately cheated on Johnny with another man.
