In the August 26 episode of Below Deck Mediterranean titled Chef Woes and Cabin Blows, Chef Jono faced serious issues, including serving raw fish to a guest with a food allergy. As a result, Captain Sandy considered replacing him.
The tension between Jono and Sandy had been building all season, with both making critical remarks about each other on Bravo's other shows. Captain Sandy even appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on June 24, suggesting Jono should improve his cooking skills.
In Season 9 of Below Deck Mediterranean, new cast members were introduced alongside Captain Sandy, Aesha, and Ellie. Chef Jono, with seven years of yachting experience, faced major issues in episode 13. In addition to serving raw fish, Jono also served cookie/chocolate cake with ice cream instead of the requested crème brûlée.
After the matter reached the ears of Captain Sandy, she confronted Jono. After setting the chef down, she explained her stance to the chef.
“Serving the guests raw fish is a fireable offense. I’m not going to do that, but that can’t happen. Now the dessert last night, she was really upset. I am not sure why a cookie would be served. Why not do a creme brulee or something on their preference sheet? In the end, you want to bring it more than you did from now until the end of the season,” stated Captain Sandy.
Chef Jono's afterthoughts on their clash on Below Deck Mediterranean explored
Captain Sandy has previously clashed with a chef on Below Deck Mediterranean when Chef Matthew Shea walked off during Season 6. In the latest episode, she recalled this incident, saying that the lack of a chef led to the guests suffering and resulted in "the worst meal the clients ever had."
After service, Jono also shared his disappointment with the crew members as he felt this night had ruined all the good work he had put in all season. Captain Sandy mulled over finding a replacement for Jono during the episode but was unable to find one which prompted Sandy to have a one-on-one talk with the chef in the galley.
In an August 19 interview with US Weekly, Jono revealed that it was his first time hearing about such a situation where the captain was trying to replace him and was shocked to hear about the development.
“I didn’t feel that during the show. I didn’t know that that was her position. I didn’t know that there was a backup chef,” stated Jono.
Jono also claimed that these events didn't change his respectful thoughts towards Captain Sandy on Below Deck Mediterranean and he still looked after her as a role model. Claiming he was a feminist himself because he grew up in a family filled with strong women who carved their own paths in their respective fields and Captain Sandy was the first female captain he had worked under.
When prompted about his thoughts on whether he thought things would have turned out differently had he known about the backup chef, Chef Jono claimed he was giving his all regardless and the outcome would have been the same according to him.
New episodes of Below Deck Mediterranean air every Monday at 9/8c on Bravo.
