The Challenge season 40 finale began with part 1 in episode 18, aired on January 1. Contestants faced swimming challenges in the sea to gather puzzle clues.
Host T.J. Lavin introduced a twist: eliminated contestants would cast Karma Votes, which would influence the finalists' overall scores alongside their performance in the final challenge.
He said:
"All eight of you have been rated by all the eliminated players throughout the season."
He said that whoever would have more ratings would be at an advantage, similarly the one with the least rating would have a disadvantage added to their score from the final challenge.
What The Challenge host T.J. Lavin say about Karma Votes on season 40 episode 18?
Fans of Survivor or Big Brother might know the importance of the votes the eliminated players of the jury cast to decide the winner. The players of these shows also play their game in a way that they make the highest number of alliances and do everything to not break the existing ones.
But a twist came unexpectedly for The Challenge season 40 because the players addressed the game in a cut-throat way, not knowing about the repercussions.
Host T.J. Lavin revealed that eliminated contestants were kept to cast Karma Votes. Each eliminated player would rate the eight finalists from one to five, with five being the highest. These points would be added to the finalists' scores from the final challenge. Bananas joked he thought T.J. kept them just to say goodbye.
The Karma Votes won't be revealed till the end, so even when the final challenge winners are announced, the winners of the season will be unknown. They will only be revealed after the disclosure of the Karma Votes, which will add to each player's final points.
After T.J. announced how Karma Votes would work, the camera flashed back to some of the eliminated contestants of The Challenge season 40 weighing in on their votes. For Jordan, CT said he grew on him this season, while Jodi said:
"You are hysterical but can also be a kind of an *ss."
Ryan stated that Jordan's "hot head" had pissed him off, while Tina revealed that she was going to give Rachel her highest score. Jonna weighed in on her cons and noted that she was eliminated because of Rachel. Emily praised Derrek by calling him an underdog while Darrell said he never made a promise he could not keep.
While Tony and Aviv had good things to say about Jenny, Katie thought she wasn't nice to anyone, and Cory recalled how she targeted him three different times. Counting Tori's cons, Kellyanne said that Tori made good money on OnlyFans.
Nurys said she loved Kyland because he was her best friend, Horacio echoed her sentiments as he said:
"I would put a six in there if I could."
Olivia wanted Michele to have a lead over the others, while Brandon and Josh weren't very happy with her game. Aneesa said Bananas didn't need a good rating and Leroy said that he didn't want Bananas to win the money over someone who hadn't, Cara Maria looked for negative numbers.
Finale part 2 of The Challenge season 40 will come out next Wednesday, at 8 pm ET, on MTV.
