The Later Daters' producer Michelle Obama's partnership with Netflix explained
Although Michelle Obama didn't appear in The Later Daters, she and her production team have signed a deal with Netflix to develop and produce content for the streaming platform. The dating show was part of Michelle's storytelling partnership with Netflix, signed in 2018.
Netflix released a statement on May 21, 2018, announcing the partnership with Michelle Obama and her husband Barack Obama. The couple entered a multi-year agreement to produce films and series for the streamer.
According to the statement, the couple was signed to "produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features." After production, these projects were scheduled to be available to the 125 million Netflix users in 190 countries.
The Later Daters' producer and her husband created Higher Ground Productions to handle the creation of a diverse mix of content for Netflix.
“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” then-President Barack Obama said the statement.
He added that through their partnership with Netflix, he and Michelle hoped to develop "talented, inspiring, creative voices" who could help to promote "greater empathy and understanding" between people. They hoped to provide a stage for them to share their stories with the entire world.
Michelle chimed in that she and her husband believed in the power of storytelling which could help to inspire them, to make them think differently about the world around them, and to help them open their minds and hearts to others.
The Later Daters' producer added that Netflix’s unparalleled service was a "natural fit" for the kinds of stories they want to share and they were excited to work on their new partnership
“Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in the statement.
Sarandos further shared that he was proud that Michelle and Barack Obama chose Netflix to showcase their "formidable storytelling abilities".
“We are incredibly proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities," he councluded.
