America’s Got Talent season 19 returned on August 13, 2024, after a three-week break with its first week of the live quarterfinal round. Sofia Vergara shocked everyone by pressing the golden buzzer to a death-defying performance by Tanzania's Hakuna Matata Acrobats.
The Tanzania team performed three major acts showcasing their strengths, balancing abilities, and trust for their fellow teammates. The crowd loved it, the judges loved it but Sofia Vergara loved it the most. She stood before everyone and pressed the golden buzzer for the Tanzania team.
When asked why she pressed the golden buzzer, she said,
"I mean everything, all of it. This was perfection and I can see their personalities tonight. It was beautiful. You guys deserve this."
America’s Got Talent Quarterfinals Golden Buzzer winner performance
The Tanzanian team began their performance with a solo balancing act. Three members held a circular platform on their shoulders, while the fourth climbed onto it and stacked five small cylinders. He then placed a rectangular board on top of the cylinders and balanced on it without support before jumping off to finish the act.
After a brief dance sequence, Hakuna Matata Acrobats proceeded to their second act. While the other team members were setting up for the act, one of them performed a back flip followed by him flexing his bicep.
Their second act involved two teammates standing on a rolla bolla while holding another teammate on their shoulders. The fourth teammate then got himself on top of the third and did a headstand on his head. Finally, the first two teammates started to balance themselves on the rolla bolla, completing the act. The Tanzania team amazed the America’s Got Talent crowd by staying in this position for over 40 seconds.
Hakuna Matata Acrobats saved the best for the last. Their final act involved one of their teammates standing on a rolla bola while lifting off his three teammates. They formed a linear human pyramid with the teammate on the top performing a one-handed handstand onto the head of the teammate below him.
The Tanzania team amazed all the judges and the audience members. Their performance was greeted by loud cheers and a standing ovation from everyone in the America’s Got Talent studio. The team themselves were also quite happy with their acts.
Judges reactions
America’s Got Talent Host Terry Crews went straight to the judges and asked them what they felt about Hakuna Matata Acrobats' whole performance.
Simon Cowell loved what he saw as he was on his feet giving the Tanzania team his thumbs up and his appreciation. Simon said that it was the most difficult and dangerous act on a live show. He felt that the Acrobatic team has done it and he has a lot of respect for them and what they do.
Howie Mandel went on to describe how amazing their act was. They were above and beyond according to him.
"What you are doing, I don't know people realize how amazing that is. We see 8,7,5 balancing, we see hand balancers and to be able to combine that and have the strength to hold everyone was above and beyond," Howie said.
Heidi Klum had her attention set on the Tanzania team from the "beginning to the very end". America’s Got Talent judge felt that the things the Acrobatic team does are death-defying and they are incredible.
Sofia Vergara felt that this was the most ambitious act she had seen on AGT.
"I don’t think you guys need any help from anyone, but regardless of that I have to do this," she said.
Vergara then pressed the golden buzzer, setting off the golden confetti and sending Hakuna Matata Acrobats to the finals.
America’s Got Talent season 19 episode 10 will be released on August 14, 2024, on NBC.
